Dr Walid Ahmar

Chairperson

He has a Bachelor of Science Honours degree, Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine, Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians, Fellow of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, and is a Fellow of the American Cardiac College 

He is a Cardiologist at MonashHeart , Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne Australia since 2007; Practices cardiology at MonashHealth- Clayton, Dandenong, Casey; St Vincent’s Private Hospital and Brunswick Private Hospital. He is on the Medical Advisory committee of the Brunswick Private Hospital. He is active in cardiology research with over 30 papers published in medical journals and books internationally. 

He is the founder of the Australian Lebanese Medical Association (ALMA) in 2012. He has helped establish chapters in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia. He was initially the Victorian ALMA president in 2012 until 2016. He has been the National President of the Australian Lebanese Medical Association since 2016. 

He organised and led the First ever Australian health-political delegation (19 health and political representatives formed the group) to Beirut Lebanon in July 2017- met with the Lebanese parliamentary health committee, various political leaders, visited hospitals and medical centers throughout Lebanon. 

 

 

Since 2009 he has provided and organised regular health education talks to our Australian Lebanese community. These community education talks have been held in various Australian Lebanese religious or community centres in Victoria 

He is the founder and president of International Lebanese Medical Association (ILMA) established in 2013. 

He was responsible for changing the Tabacco Act in the state of Victoria to include shisha or waterpipe smoking to be treated like cigarette smoking in 2016. This was conducted in collaboration with the Heart Foundation, QUIT Australia and the anti-cancer Council of Australia. 

He was awarded the National Heart Foundation -President’s Award in October 2017- for work in cardiac awareness in the Lebanese and Arabic Community, promoting heart awareness and CPR, advocating, promoting and successfully changing in the Tabacco Act of Victoria in 2016. He was a National Heart Foundation Ambassador – “Give with Heart Day’ June 27 2018.
